The wrestling mat is circular, and matches are divided into three time periods. Wrestlers start in a neutral position, and they can choose to be on top or bottom in the second and third periods. Folkstyle wrestling emphasizes control, endurance, and strategic thinking. To learn more about scoring and match details, please see our “Anatomy of a Youth Wrestling Match” page.

  • How does Lionheart handle differing experience and ability levels?
We understand that each wrestler is unique, with varying levels of experience and athletic ability. Our program caters to each wrestler's individual needs, and we utilize breakout groups and a tiered coaching staff to ensure that each wrestler receives the instruction and attention they need. Our coaches work with wrestlers of similar skill levels and experience in smaller groups, allowing for more one-on-one attention and a personalized approach. Using this approach, our more experienced wrestlers can continue to progress while newer wrestlers can focus on the basics and developing their technique. We believe that by catering to each wrestler's individual needs, we can help everyone reach their full potential.
  • Is there anything my child should do to prepare for practice?
Yes, there are a few things your child can do to prepare for youth wrestling practice. They should wear comfortable athletic clothing, bring a water bottle to stay hydrated, and pack any necessary equipment like wrestling shoes. It's also a good idea to encourage your child to eat a healthy snack before practice to ensure they have enough energy to perform their best. Most importantly, your child should be mentally prepared to learn and work hard during practice. Coaches may have specific drills or techniques they want the wrestlers to focus on, so being ready to listen and follow directions can help your child get the most out of each practice.
  • How can I support my child's wrestling development outside of practice?
There are several ways. Encourage your child to stay active. Watching wrestling matches and technique videos with your child on YouTube can really help you both in developing an understanding of the sport. Additionally, you can help your child maintain a healthy diet to support their physical and mental growth. Most important of all, provide encouragement and support—being there to listen to and love them and taking the time to watch their matches.
  • How do I know if my child is making progress in wrestling?
In youth wrestling, progress is not only measured by wins and losses or medals, but also by the development of character traits such as confidence, resilience, and perseverance. Each wrestler's progress is unique and can take time, so it's important to not get discouraged as a parent. Look for signs of improvement in your child's technique and ability to execute moves, as well as their sportsmanship, attitude, and work ethic. Remember to encourage your child to focus on their own progress and not compare themselves to others. Celebrate their small victories and growth, and trust the process of their development.
  • Should I help coach or correct my child’s mistakes in wrestling?
For a in-depth response to this question, please see the following: “Your Role as a Parent: A Letter from the Lionheart Coaches”
  • I see my child crying sometimes. Should I be concerned?
It's not uncommon for children to experience a wide range of emotions during wrestling, including frustration and tears. Wrestling is an intensely physically and mentally challenging sport, and it's natural for children to feel overwhelmed or discouraged at times. However, rest assured that our coaches are trained to recognize when a child is struggling and will step in if necessary. If your child experiences any injuries, our coaches are well-equipped to evaluate the situation and determine if it's serious or not. It's important to remember that wrestling is an extremely tough sport, but with the right support and guidance, your child will learn to manage their emotions and develop the resilience and mental toughness that will serve them well both on and off the mat for a lifetime.
  • What should I do if my child gets injured during practice?
In the event that your child gets injured during practice, it is important to notify the coaches immediately. The coaches are trained in CDC Head’s Up Concussion protocols and, generally, there is a medical professional on site that can assess the situation and determine the appropriate course of action. If necessary, they will provide first aid. In the unlikely event of serious injury, the club has incidental insurance provided by the AAU to cover any potential medical costs. This is another reason it is imperative that your child have an active AAU card and club registration.
